To the Long-Term Subscribers of Der Weg

You may still recall that we asked you in the July issue (No. 7/49) to voluntarily pay the difference between the old and new subscription prices due to the price increases for the Der Weg subscription from July onward to the representative responsible. Some representatives, for whom we are grateful for this pointer, have now pointed out to us that the request has been overlooked in several instances and advised us to repeat it in a visible place.

Certainly each of you will understand that with the high circulation of Der Weg, with the sudden increase in production costs and with the significant expansion and pictorial design of our issues, we are heavily burdened if we have to deliver the issues produced at the increased price at the old cheap price.

In practice, it is therefore about asking our subscribers for their kind willingness to pay the difference per issue, which amounts to approx. m$n 0.90 for annual subscription and m$n 1.— for semester subscription. They should do so for the issues they are entitled to under their subscription from July inclusive, to the nearest representative with exact name indication. This only concerns those subscribers whose subscription extends from the first half-year to the second or who have renewed their subscription at the previous price.

We hereby thank the subscribers who have complied with our request most sincerely. We would be pleased if our request finds good resonance.

General Eisenhower himself was not present at the surrender. Only a group of American, French, British and Russian officers and newspaper correspondents was in attendance. So, after the signing of the surrender, we all hurried through the corridors to the office of the Supreme Commander to witness the presentation of the German generals there. General Eisenhower sat motionless behind his desk, his face like a plaster mask. The Germans were lined up in front of his desk. The Supreme Commander stared at General Jodl and then asked the interpreter: “Do they know what they have signed?” Jodl confirmed “Yes, yes,” even before the interpreter could speak. Then General Eisenhower harshly told the Germans that they would receive the surrender orders from the Allied Headquarters for the individual units. Then he said: “Have them taken away.” The Germans were escorted out of the Supreme Commander’s office.

Goethe is for us a symbol of a spiritual and intellectual power that spans worlds and times, which, through its creative shaping force, has bestowed upon our Western world the most beautiful and imperishable forms of expression. Through Goethe, a spiritual and intellectual heritage addresses us with a binding obligation, one for whose shaping generations of the finest humanity have struggled, for whose preservation we the living today are concerned, and for whose fulfillment future generations will unfold their best. What we yearn for and hope, what we love and revere, came to consciousness in him and found valid expression in his great art. Thus, we often shudder in reverence before what seems to us almost a miracle: that all values of human preservation and Western civilization trace back to him and his thinking or are vitally bound to his work.

That this preeminent figure was a German fills us with pride and faithful confidence; that he was a European of world-encompassing spirituality and intellectuality obliges us to unremitting endeavor.

It is the danger of all commemorative celebrations that one turns the genius into a cinema hero and his awe-inspiring destiny into a cheap attraction. For us in this issue, it is not about simply visibly offering our greeting to Goethe, but rather, in the fitting solemnity to which the recurrence of his 200th birthday provides the occasion, to demonstrate in what measure he forms the foundation of our Western thinking and willing. That we were able to enlist some of the most qualified in German spiritual and intellectual life for this elevates what is said from the sphere of fleetingness into that of endurance.

We ask our readers, however, not to leaf through this commemorative issue on the train or between hanging up the coat and supper, but rather in hours of inner calm and outer harmony to delve into its content and seek to comprehend it. Let no one be discouraged if they encounter what seems incomprehensible or difficult. The haste of daily life all too easily weans us from the charm of “conquering” the unusual through thoughtful engagement. Each of these contributions is so rich in substance and essential that it will often reveal only after repeated thoughtful reading how close the genius stands to us precisely today and how deeply we are bound to him.

Against the Babylonian confusion of minds in our days he sets the creative duality from völk-rooted strength and worldwide culture; against the egocentric overvaluation of Materialism the value-creating Idealism; against the mind-dulling massification the respect for the distinctive personality; against the intoxication of unbridled passion the measure and dignity of action; against the despairing wandering of the embittered the power of the pure and steadfast character; against the world-averted pessimism the diversity and blissful richness of life; against exuberant optimism the factual integrity; against the delusion of support- and formlessness the beauty of the noble Gestaltungsform (Form of Design); against stubborn narrow-mindedness the farsightedness and the happiness of a comprehensive education; against the dissection of the soul the indivisibility and harmony of the divine creation; against the perverse banalization of the sublime the reverence before the incomprehensible; against doubt and unbelief the inexhaustible vital force from the healthy Kern (core/heart/essence).

But do not make him merely into a saint, for he was a human like us, do not make of him a self-righteous prophet, for he erred as we do also—but seek to grasp him and his work and immerse yourselves in its immeasurable richness, strengthen your faith and your will from the power of his spirit and intellect and the depth of his humanity, for Goethe is like the sun, in which the good yearns toward maturity.

Thus, we seekers thank you, Goethe, for the strength of your work and greet you in reverence!

Excerpt from WEM BLEIBT DER SIEG (1919)

We must not desire to be consoled, but we must courageously strive to recognize; recognition is not penance and contrition. We must remain creatively aware of our inner work with the dignity of one who holds himself devoted to a flattering belief, and without self-humiliation, learn to understand why the hatred of an entire world could be heaped upon us.

Whoever thinks he stands at the grave of the German Volk sins against the German Volk, whose distinctive character must find the path to mature greatness, just as every force finds its way through resistance—thus, even now in our gravest distress, this certainty of life is our most valuable possession. We have bitterly tested our credulity and harshly overcome it. From the womb of this distress, values must emerge for the German Wesen (essence), comparable to the life values of the German Reformation era.

Publisher’s Announcement

We would have liked to present our readers with the expansion of our journal to 104 pages as a gift, but the difficult economic conditions in the publishing industry do not permit this. As we announced in the previous issue, we have now had to set the price of the single issue at m$n 3 ARS.

The burden of the increased volume and technical enhancements is, however, so great that we also ask those subscribers whose subscriptions have been running for some time, and who have therefore still paid the old subscription prices, to contribute voluntarily to this expansion. We therefore call on our subscribers to deposit the difference of m$n 1 ARS per issue for this one and the issues still to be delivered with their representative.

We request that the representatives send us a monthly list, by name, of the amounts received.

We are confident that our readers and friends will understand the rationale behind these measures, all the more so once they have had the opportunity to read this issue.

We remain a monthly magazine!

Due to the paper shortage in Argentina, contrary to our intentions, we will be forced to abandon our bi-weekly publication starting July 1. We thus remain a monthly magazine as we have been, but we will expand the individual issues and allocate 104 columns to each.

Not only because of this expansion, but above all because of the continuously rising costs, we are increasing the price of the issue to m$n3—starting with the next issue.

The expansion will primarily benefit the literary aspect of the issues. We have meanwhile become the leading German magazine abroad. This should spur us on to continue serving as the guiding force through the existing and upcoming challenges in all matters of universal relevance. Beyond the German and Austrian personalities you are familiar with, many notable intellectual leaders of our people in all fields have again placed their collaboration at our disposal.

Thus, we now have all the resources at our disposal to advance our work further everywhere on earth. We therefore call upon each of our readers: Help where it is still lacking, and maintain the connection with us as before.

We further inform our readers in Brazil that we felt compelled to terminate our representative relationship with Mr. Godofredo Entres, since the connection was no longer tenable for the reputation of our magazine.

In connection with the news of a distribution ban on our magazine in the American Occupation Zone (of Germany) and in Austria, spread by some press agencies, we refer to our Spanish-language lead article and to our response note in the Freie Presse, Buenos Aires, dated May 29, 1949.

We respond!

For officially unfounded motives, the distribution of our magazine Der Weg was banned in the American Occupation Zone (of Germany) and in Austria. The announcement of these measures by the agencies The Associated Press and United Press was viewed by some newspapers as a signal for a well-considered and centrally directed defamation campaign against Der Weg. Certainly, various questions are pressing upon our readers, the answers to which we wish to summarize in three points based on our knowledge of the underlying connections.

1. What are the real causes of this measure?

Der Weg is a young and successful magazine that was founded in July 1947. Through its high cultural and literary level, through truthful independent reporting, through the collaboration of renowned international figures, through sensational special reports, in short, on the basis of intellectual, editorial, and technical achievements, it experienced a unique upward development. This made it possible to increase the circulation tenfold within two years, and it was designated throughout the world as the “most significant post-war publication in the German language”. This, along with the fact that the number of advertisers grew steadily and the circle of readers and contributors expanded evenly, caused unrest to haunt the circles of the newspaper Argentinisches Tageblatt, published in Buenos Aires in German, whose circulation figure was surpassed by Der Weg, before an ascending “competitor”.

When, in the March issue of 1949, the supplementary issues and in the following issue, the biweekly appearance were announced, it seems that in the mentioned circles it was decided to “damage the competition”. However, since this did not seem possible through journalistic outbidding, they resorted to the foul methods of “politicizing the business” and dragged the economic and competitive struggle onto the political level. The cheapest and today effective means is that of the accusation of “Nazism”.

Without waiting for the appearance of the announced contributions, they hurled this reproach at Der Weg, assuming that this would damage its reputation in the world. In an article in the Argentinisches Tageblatt of May 31, 1949, the author expressed this with the words: “It is time to deal with this publication . . . ”, not to orient oneself, as he claims, about the spirit (that would have been noticed much earlier in today’s sensitive world with a real “Nazi organ”!), but to find the starting points to damage the competition economically with political arguments. They acted alarmed and thoughtlessly, and embarrassed themselves accordingly. They mentioned articles that never appeared or were not planned in this way, while, in contrast, they did not mention those articles that had already appeared.

• From Hanna Reitsch, no contribution had appeared at all; it was merely an excerpt from a private letter that had been published, in which she turned against deliberate falsifications.

• The accusation of “Nazi tendency” on the basis of an alleged “collaboration” of Otto Skorzeny is baseless and silly, since the planned report on the liberation of Benito Mussolini was written with the knowledge of the United States military government and distributed by the agency Agence France-Presse and since it had been published before in a Swiss magazine and in an Argentine evening newspaper among others.

• To impute political intentions to the planned instructive travel report by Colin Roß is nonsensical.

In continuation of the slanders, they also tried to construct a “Nazi organization” around Der Weg and rose to the following sentence:

“It is impossible that it [the magazine!] covers even the printing costs from its own revenues. One can therefore calculate where the amounts required for financing come from.”

This claim is a characteristic and well-known intrigue motif. Der Weg sustains itself, like all magazines, through the revenues from subscription and advertising fees, as also emerges from the bookkeeping. In the above-mentioned article, the author himself admitted that he does not believe in the building of a “party organization”. We understand well to what extent, besides competition, professional envy may have played a role in this maneuver, since we were able to bring sensational first publications that every press organ would have taken over with the greatest propagandistic effort if they had been offered to them. Furthermore, in the course of this unclean campaign, they tried to spread the idea that Der Weg would have been brought illegally to Germany, even disguised in food crates! However, the fact is that as early as August 1948 the press office of the local United States embassy was officially informed of the distribution in Germany, that for months the issues went as printed matter to Germany and Austria, about which the postal records provide information, and that for the official distribution planned from July in Germany the corresponding representative was named in the first issues of 1949.

The press police office in Graz issued an express certificate that there is nothing to object to against the distribution of Der Weg. This would not have happened if one had been dependent on the use of smuggling routes! Thereupon, the conscious circles attempted to defame the representative in Munich; however, the highest United States certificates attest to his impeccable character. Finally, the competitive envy revealed itself in an article in the Argentinisches Tageblatt of April 31, 1949—the claim of an alleged “Nazism” was anticipated in the explanations and set up in the headline, but in the article could not be developed at all and moreover was led ad absurdum by the author’s own findings and conclusions. To crown this smear campaign, two respected Argentine daily newspapers were drawn into the game, one of which published a corresponding original contribution on this topic in its edition of June 1, 1949, while the second did so on June 6, 1949. We deeply regret that these two significant newspapers, which enjoy general respect on the basis of their rich reporting, became victims of such a murky and uncollegial maneuver.

The author of the first commentary was unfamiliar with Der Weg. This is evident, among other things, from the fact that he did not know the name of our magazine, El Sendero, as it is clearly readable on every title page, and designated us with El Camino. The true authors of the second commentary become clear from the fact that their own commentary of the Argentinisches Tageblatt was taken over almost word for word. We assume that these two statements by serious Argentine newspapers are not based on malice but rather on the justified intention to reprimand an allegedly “anti-democratic-Nazi” magazine, for which they had to hold us accountable based on the mentioned slanders and consciously false information. We hope that through our explanations, the true facts will become clear to both newspapers. However, the most crucial aspect of the entire maneuver was the deliberate provision of false information to the United States occupation authorities, which facilitated the implementation of the distribution ban in parts of Germany and Austria.

2. How is such a measure compatible with the claim of democracy?

Our evaluation of German and European events and conditions naturally deviates in many ways from that of the occupation authorities, for no occupying power ever grants the occupied country free expression of opinion. Even less would this be expected from a military occupation government. It gives food for thought when, simultaneously with the establishment of freedom of thought in the Bonn Constitution [Basic Law], the spiritus rector of this constitution negates it with the distribution ban of a magazine. But no democracy can deny the principle of intellectual freedom, and if differences of opinion among people who have nothing to hide should even be grounds for hatred and personal attacks, every democratic development will be stifled in the bud.

We count on the insight of those responsible when we assume that, after clarification of the real facts, the order will be reversed. One thing can be said with certainty: if the free development of Der Weg is prevented in a country, this is irrefutable proof that one is far removed from the realization of democratic conviction.

3. How do we stand on this?

In the July 1947 issue of Der Weg, we presented our guidelines. We still stand by them today. We have always acted in full compliance with the law on an openly defensible intellectual level, as expressed by all Argentine statesmen to date and reflected in corresponding decrees. As Argentines of German descent, we have conveyed to the world both an accurate understanding of Argentina and South America in enlightening and, in some cases, fundamental publications, and on the other hand, tried to bring closer to it the problems and necessities of Europe and Germany. To impute secret or “Nazi” intentions to us is absurd and proves not only a lack of knowledge of our work but also reveals the evil intention. We have been able to offer our large readership the most significant German-language literature, featuring original contributions by first authors. Our essays from the fields of art, culture, and science have aroused the liveliest interest in international circles and have been reprinted in various publications.

Few other contemporary magazines bring together such a select group of international collaborators across all fields of the arts. Countless letters of recognition and congratulations from international researchers, scientists, university professors, poets, writers, and artists (we mention only the deceased Hans Pfitzner) are available to us. None of these would have made even a single pen stroke for a “Nazi organ”!

In a large Argentine evening newspaper both the experience reports of Otto Skorzeny’s as well as Joseph Goebbels’ diaries were published; in newspapers of the United States almost daily reports of a German prince of North American citizenship well-known in Catholic circles [Hubertus zu Löwenstein] are published, whose sharpness in criticism of the United States occupation power can hardly be surpassed; a well-known Swiss daily newspaper [Neue Zürcher Zeitung] was banned in Germany some time ago—it is edited by a liberal, esteemed Swiss National Councilor [Willy Bretscher] . . . No person in the world would come to the thought of making the reproach of “Nazi propaganda” to one of these press organs or authors! —All contributions published by us are signed by the authors, and suggestions and collaboration came to us from the most diverse circles, independent of parties and confessions.

“Sire, give freedom of thought!” is the word of a great German poet [Friedrich Schiller] to Napoleon Bonaparte I. This word expresses the demand that has been raised repeatedly since the inception of the human state order. The great reproach made to politically authoritarian states culminates in the patronizing of areas of life and knowledge, and the resulting measures of book and teaching censorship; press and radio restriction; in short, the ignoring of freedom of opinion. This was therefore firmly anchored in all truly democratic constitutions of our age. In the United States, a magnanimous freedom prevails in this sense, and the same may be said of Argentina. In the spirit of this intellectual freedom, Der Weg is aware of its responsibility to act as a purifying and clarifying force in the current confusion of minds and to honestly open the door and gate to all constructive forces and opinions.

Only where clarity and cleanliness prevail can the good soul forces thrive, but in the dark chaos of disorder, the climbing plants of decomposing amorality proliferate. The soil of Argentine generosity and freedom, today more than ever, is the epitome of a true democracy for Europeans, and the forces of Argentine history, in which the struggle for ultimate intellectual values found expression, help us to solve this task in the freedom and dignity of our own thinking and thus contribute to the longed-for world peace.

Character: The Influence of Work.

Work, above all, forms the practical character; it produces and disciplines obedience, self-control, application, and perseverance, giving man skill and ability in his profession and the aptitude and intelligence indispensable for conducting the affairs of ordinary life well.

Work is the natural law of our existence, the principle that impels men and nations forward. The immense majority of men are obliged, in order to live, to work with their hands; but all, without distinction, must occupy themselves in one way or another if they want to enjoy life as it should be enjoyed.

All that is great in men comes from work, and civilization is its product. Idleness corrodes the heart of men and peoples, and destroys them like rust on iron.

True happiness is never found in the numbing of the faculties, but in their action and in their wise employment. It is indolence that exhausts and not action, in which, on the contrary, life, health, pleasure are found. The spirit may be fatigued, tired by work, but it is a true devastation that laziness produces in it. An archbishop of Mayence compared the heart to a millstone: “If you put wheat in, it converts it into flour; if you put no grain, it is itself that wears away.”

The duty of being industrious applies to all classes and to all conditions of society. Each one in his sphere has his work to perform, the rich the same as the poor. The gentleman by his birth and his education, whatever the wealth with which he may be endowed, cannot help but feel that he is obliged in conscience to bring his quota of effort for the general well-being of which he partakes. It is not possible that it should suffice for him to be well fed and well clothed by the work of others, without giving in exchange something to the society that maintains him. An honorable and worthy man would revolt at the idea of sitting down at a feast and partaking of the joys, and then leaving without paying his share.

On the other hand, the length of years does not prove the length of life. The life of a man should be measured by what he does and by what he feels in it. The more usefully he works, the more he thinks and the more he feels, the more he truly lives. The idle and useless man, whatever the extent of his existence, does not live; he simply vegetates.

A constant and profitable occupation is, then, healthy, not only for the body, but also for the spirit. While the lazy man drags himself lazily through life and the best part of nature sleeps in deep slumber, if it is not already dead morally and spiritually, the energetic man is, on the contrary, a source of activity and pleasure for those who find themselves in the radius of his influence.

We have spoken of work as a discipline: it also educates the character. Work, even if it produced no result at all, merely because it is work, is worth more than inaction, for by developing the faculties, it prepares for useful work. The habit of work teaches method. It makes us economize time and dispose of it only with discreet premeditation. And once we have acquired through experience the art of filling life with useful occupations, we will not waste a single minute; and when unoccupied time comes, its enjoyment will have a greater flavor for us.

The greatest geniuses have been, without exception, the greatest workers and have descended to the most detailed occupations. Not only have they worked more laboriously than common men, but they have brought to their work more powerful faculties and a more ardent spirit. Nothing great or lasting has ever been improvised. Only through noble patience and noble labor have the works of genius been able to be realized. Power belongs only to workers; the lazy are always impotent.

We can, then, deduce as a conclusion that a wise measure of work is as good for the spirit as for the body. It is not work, but the excess of work, that is harmful; and rough work does less harm than a monotonous, disagreeable work without hope. All work is healthy when it rests on a hope, and one of the great secrets of happiness is to feel usefully occupied with the hope of having good success. What is unhealthy is to pass one's life eating, drinking and sleeping. One wears out through inaction with even more rapidity than through the use of work.

A Chinese emperor wisely said:

“as long as there were a single man who did not work, or a single woman who was idle, there would always be someone in the empire who would suffer from cold or hunger.”

Character: The Influence of the Family

Home is the first and most important school of character. It is there that every human being receives his best moral training, or his worst; for it is there that he imbibes those principles of conduct which endure through manhood, and cease only with life.

There is a proverb that says: “The home makes the man.” For this reason, family education comprises not only customs and the spirit, but also character. Especially in the home is where the heart is opened, customs are formed, intelligence awakens, and character is molded for good or for evil.

From this origin, be it pure or impure, proceed the principles and maxims that govern society. Law itself is nothing more than the reflection of the family. The most insignificant fragments of opinion sown in the spirits of children in private life later make their way into the world and come to constitute public opinion; for nations are formed from the dwellings in which children are raised, and those who guide them can exercise a power even greater than those who are charged with the direction of government. The logical order of Nature requires that domestic life be a preparation for social life, and that the spirit and character be, therefore, formed in the home. There the future members of society begin by being treated in detail and shaped one by one. For this reason, the home can be considered the most influential school of civilization. For, in the end, civilization is nothing more than a question of individual education, and society will be more or less civilized according as the parts that compose it have been more or less well educated during youth.

The education of any man, even the wisest, cannot fail to be powerfully influenced by the moral circle of his early years. He comes into the world incapable of helping himself, and depends absolutely on others for his nourishment and his education.

However insignificant the influences that contribute to forming the child’s character may seem, it is certain that they accompany him throughout his life. Those inclinations that last the longest and are most deeply rooted always have their origin near our cradle. It is then that the germs of virtues or vices, of impressions or sentiments that determine the character for all of life, begin to be implanted.

It is not possible to educate a sweet nature, sensitive to evil, pure of spirit and heart, in the midst of vulgarity, misery, and impurity.

Dear Reader!

That this issue unfortunately appears delayed once again is attributable to the printers’ strike in Buenos Aires. We thank the increased efforts of loyal friends that it nonetheless appeared with such minimal delay.

That, as a result, the contributions for certain memorial days no longer appear in time for the relevant dates themselves does not diminish their significance in the least, since the events themselves are worthy of reverence at all times, and the recurrence of the dates is merely an occasion for outward honor.

Regarding the contribution in the February issue, Anna’s Liberation, we received many letters of thanks but also of disapproval. The former came exclusively from Eastern expellees, the latter from people who know of their suffering only by hearsay. We ourselves were aware of all the reasons for and against such a publication; however, the deciding factor was the fact that many, due to the accumulation of press reports about “women in East Germany raped,” “Negroes in American uniforms attacking German girls,” and so on, already meet these events with apathy, and that sometimes a horrific shock is necessary to comprehend the terrible tragedy of the fate of German people in Europe in its full scope. We believe that our readers think constructively enough that from the pain over these events, they will gain the insights and intellectual conclusions necessary for their assessment and as a prerequisite for a meaningful future.

On the occasion of Heroes’ Memorial Day in March, we have significantly expanded this issue. Therefore, it is priced at 3 marks for individual sale, while the price for subscribers remains unchanged.

Furthermore, we have a promise to fulfill: What will the supplementary issues for April, May, and June, announced in the previous issue, bring?

Even today, we do not wish to fully open our treasure chest; however, we can assure you, dear reader, that you will experience deep and rich joy from these issues, as they unite the most significant names from science, economics, politics, and military history. To name just a few of the many contributors of the highest international caliber, we mention Anton Zischka, Dr. Colin Ross, Dr. Walther Pahl, Prof. Ferdinand Fried, Zimmermann, Prof. Wilhelm Westphal, Prof. Josef Matl, and Schutzstaffel (SS)-Sturmbannführer Otto Skorzeny. You will learn more in the next issue.

Also in the existing fields, the number of contributors has significantly increased and greatly strengthened, so that the regular issues also experience enrichment. A number of the most significant and respected Goethe scholars have joined, as well as professors from German and Austrian universities, legal scholars, poets, and writers, all of whom will speak directly to our readers in those issues.

Dear reader, from this you can also see that we are fulfilling our promise of constant expansion and deepening of our magazine. We rely on your loyalty and friendship in all things. Your interest will be even more joyful when you learn that all of this is the prelude to an even greater development, about which we will report in the next issue in the same place.

Dear Reader, please permit us, with your kind understanding, to place our own concerns at the beginning of this issue. We believe that the importance of what lies close to our hearts justifies this step.

Today, we do not intend to dwell on the great success that Der Weg has enjoyed thus far, nor on the obligations this imposes upon us as editors. Yet, you will hear both echoing subtly in what follows:

To honor the many justified and insightful wishes and suggestions that reach us from our readers and friends—testimonials to their intellectual vitality and interest in our shared endeavor—and to serve successfully the goal that Der Weg has set for itself, a significant expansion of its content and the addition of new sections have become essential.

The cultural and literary section will be enhanced as follows: In our effort to familiarize our readers with the prevailing cultural and literary currents of the present and to bring them closer to their most significant representatives, we will dedicate a broader space to contemporary poetry. — Furthermore, acknowledging that today, more than ever, a pan-European perspective is vital to assess European developments—one grounded in a healthy and rooted national character—we will feature a special selection of non-German yet Europe-wide significant poetry and poets, opening up non-German cultural spheres to our readers. — Additionally, a dedicated section titled The Book will be woven into the fabric of the magazine, where not only the essential new releases from the international and German book markets will be reviewed and presented, but also all critical questions regarding literary trends and the rebuilding of the publishing world will be explored. Finally, an art print supplement featuring contemporary works will distinctly elevate the cultural caliber of our issues.

Beyond all this, Der Weg will henceforth devote particular attention to questions of South American and global economics, international economic and financial policy, world politics, geography, history and ethnology, research and natural sciences, and international law. Politically, the focal points of current and future events will be brought into sharper focus than ever before through clear and discerning observation. First-rate experts from across the globe have united to contribute their insights.

Fear not, dear reader: all this will by no means be delivered as dry scholarship, complete with pince-nez and flowing beard, presented with a wagging finger. You surely agree that we have not been lifeless or dull thus far, and behold, the same blood of creative joy—on whose wings we repeatedly soar to realms free of exhaustion or stagnation—will course through these factual contributions, bringing them vividly to life for you. For instance, in ethnology, the South American nations will first be explored through their geography, history, landscapes, customs, literature, art, and humor; a section titled From the German World Wanderer’s Book will trace the fates of German people scattered across the globe by centuries, where they have become fruitful seeds in the world’s field.

Now, we do not wish to lose ourselves in details, trusting that you, dear reader, grasp where we are headed and what a significant and far-reaching step this expansion represents: We believe that the greatest knowledge, the widest horizons from within and without, a refined education of heart and mind, a clear vision, and a disciplined intellect should ripen us for fruitful action. Do you not also believe that we should seize and shape our time in this spirit?

This expansion takes effect in April, and to meet these ambitions, intentions, and plans, a supplementary issue of Der Weg will appear each month in April, May, and June, primarily showcasing the diverse new sections and features described above. These three issues will, for now (beginning April 15), be offered independently of the regular subscription and will bear the title “Supplementary Issue to the Magazine Der Weg, (Month) 1949.” They are available only by advance order and only in conjunction with the existing Der Weg.

We ask you, dear reader, to do the following: If you wish to receive these three supplementary issues, please complete the enclosed order card with your name and full address, mark with a cross on the reverse which representative accessible to you will receive your payment, and mail the completed card back to us.

We will then deliver the issues directly to you, with payment due to the representative you designate. We urge you to act promptly. The three issues are available only as a set and will be delivered monthly. They cost m$n 3.— each, totaling m$n 9.—.

We are not yet providing a table of contents for these supplementary issues today; it will appear in the next edition. Rest assured, however, that they will be of extraordinary interest and, as we believe and hope, will earn your wholehearted approval. That we undertake this at a time when it is no trifling matter for us, but rather a hard-fought effort, may demonstrate our ceaseless work to enrich and elevate Der Weg, aspiring one day to become an indispensable companion and guide for you and all our friends.

Advice from Martín Fierro

Flaws have no boundaries, unlike land. They’re found even in the best of us, and it’s only fair to warn you: if you’ve got your own defects, don’t go pointing out others’.

Never pin your hopes on any human heart. In your darkest hour, place your trust in God; as for men, rely on one at most, and even then, be careful with two.

Work is the law of life, because you’ve got to earn your keep. Don’t set yourself up for a sorry situation; it bleeds the heart dry to have to beg.

A man’s got to work to earn his bread; for misery, in its relentless drive to hunt us down in a thousand ways, knocks on everyone’s door but walks right into the lazy man’s.

A man loses many things that he might find again someday; but here’s something you should teach and never forget: if you lose your sense of shame, you’ll never get it back.

Make sure you don’t waste either time or your sense of shame. Like any thinking man, act with good judgment always, and know that no vice ever stops where it starts.

As we embark on our third year of publication, we shall traverse the twelve months ahead with the propriety and dignity of one who knows his vital mission and, at every hour, makes character, courage, and the will to build the driving forces of his actions. One of the titanic figures of postwar revisionist historiography, Professor Austin J. App, died of kidney failure on 4 May 1984. A well-established author and scholar of English literature at the outbreak of World War II, Dr. App was soon appalled at the human suffering and political disaster caused by that “unnecessary conflict,” and for the next four decades he was in the very forefront of those courageous scholars who, often in the face of severe academic and press hostility, sought to determine the historical truth about the war, and to publicize that truth far and wide. His engaging and candid 1977 Autobiography was subtitled German-American Voice for Truth and Justice. This he certainly was, right to the end. His career as historical scholar and publicist, as recounted in his memoir and manifest in his many publications, is in essence the story from its very beginnings of the fight for the historical truth about the European war of 1939-45, and for a postwar political justice predicated upon recognition of that truth.

Austin App was born on 24 May 1902 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of August App, an immigrant from Wuerttemberg, Germany, and Katharina Obermaier, originally from Niederpoering, Lower Bavaria. He spent most of his youth on the family farm outside Milwaukee, learning about the world through voracious reading and, equally important for an impressionable and intelligent young man, through close observation of the life of animals. A lesson he gleaned from his youth on the farm is worth repeating. After an anecdote about two large rival rock roosters, who continually fought each other — and only each other — for months on end, one finally succumbing to the other in bloody resolution, App remarked that this “taught me something about individuals and nations”:

Why did they fight each other? Because one was less democratic than the other? Or because they did not understand each other? Or could not communicate? Did the final victor fight to make the world safe for democracy? Or to end all wars? Humbug and hypocrisy. They fought each other because of rivalry, because of power politics. That is the truth of it. In World War I the U.S. finally turned on Germany rather than Russia or England, because Germany was, not more wrong, but more strong. In World War II it turned on Hitler, not on Stalin, for the same reason. On every count Stalin was a barbarian, compared to Hitler. Any attempt to equate our intervention against the third Reich with crusadism or idealism is a calculated swindle against the people.

That bloody duel of these two mighty roosters also disqualified for me another myth in the relations of men and nations. It is a myth dear to Americans, namely, that persons and nations fight because they do not know each other well enough, because they do not speak the same language, they do not live contiguous enough. Utter hogwash. These two roosters were of the same breed, crowed the same way, had the same friends — and fought each other to the death. So did the North and the South in the Civil War. We fought two wars against our English cousin — same language, same customs; and two with our next nearest of kin, the Germans, whose language is a cognate of English, and whom we knew and understood best of all peoples in the world after those of the British Isles. We were twice allies of the Russians, whom we do not understand at all and who are the least contiguous to us. If we have not yet fought Ireland, it is not because we understand the Irish, but because they have not yet challenged our supremacy of the sea! One could in fact be cynical and say human nature is intrinsically so inclined to evil that the better they know each other the more likely they are to fight — and the more bitterly: civil wars are notoriously the most brutal. And since their premature liberation from colonialism, the Africans — for example, in the Congo and in Nigeria — have killed more fellow Africans in a few decades than the European Christian colonizers killed in several hundred years! Had the American government lived by the lesson of what the farmyard has taught me, both world wars would have been avoided — and future generations would have been spared a lot of hypocritical balderdash inflicted on the world as history. After attending public and parochial schools, he entered St. Francis Seminary near Milwaukee, where he received a liberal classical education, graduating in 1921, and returning to the “Major Seminary” there to obtain his B.A. degree in 1923. He entered graduate school at the Catholic University, Washington D.C., receiving his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in English literature. His doctoral dissertation of 1929, Lancelot in English Literature, was published to critical acclaim and became a standard of the literature; it was republished in 1965 by Haskell House of New York, seeing wide use as a college text.

After a period of travelling widely in Central and Western Europe during the trouble-fraught first years of the Depression, Dr. App settled down to teaching posts at Catholic University, Basselin College and Sisters College. He wrote prolifically, his human-interest, literary, and religious articles and book reviews appearing in such publications as Catholic Educational Review, Commonweal, Sign Magazine, Magnificat, Catholic World, and the Washington Post. He co-founded the monthly literary review, Best Sellers. From 1934 to 1942 he taught at St. Thomas College, University of Scranton, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He received the university’s Faculty Gold Medal in 1939 as “outstanding educator of men.”

Entering the U.S. Army in 1942, he served briefly in the Corps of Engineers before being released to work in private industry. After a period of teaching at Dominican College, St. Mary’s of the Woods, in Columbus, Ohio, he secured a professorship at Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, Texas, where he taught from 1944 to 1948.

It was while in San Antonio, learning about the wreckage of Europe caused by the American-Soviet invasion and those two allies’ obscene occupation policies, that Dr. App really began his “second career” as a contemporary historian and samizdat publisher of an age of calamity. All through the war he had, in fact — and in spite of the danger, acute within a nation at war, of stern official disfavor — kept up a steady barrage of letters to newspapers, magazines, and public figures, expressing his frank opinions about the origins of the war and the need for a negotiated peace with Germany. In the Spring of 1946, sickened by the Potsdam-sanctioned policy of mass-expulsion of the Eastern Germans, and particularly shocked by the terrible atrocities visited upon helpless German women in the East by the conquering Red hordes, App self-published his first pamphlet, the ten-page Ravishing the Women of Conquered Europe. Its success was immediate and unexpected; orders came in by the thousands, periodicals far and wide picked it up, it was translated into four languages — all this with the “advertising” being almost solely by word-of-mouth. Additionally, invitations by the dozens came to App to speak in front of patriotic groups. There seemed to exist a genuine thirst on the part of a considerable segment of the American public for knowledge of a situation, exposure to a viewpoint, about which the mainline press, by-and-large, was keeping silent. In July 1946 he published the 24-page Slave-Laboring German Prisoners of War, and at the end of the year collected 13 original and republished articles and speeches in the book History’s Most Terrifying Peace, the first major work to bring to the attention of significant numbers of Americans the facts about the Carthaginian treatment being meted out to conquered Germany, by the West as well as the East. The book had to be reprinted only two months after the original press run.

Austin App had touched a nerve. In those dismal postwar years, an America punch-drunk with, and already beginning to feel dubious about, the massed “victory” whoops of the established media, badly needed a corrective balance. This lone scholar in San Antonio found himself supplying a goodly part of it, in his crusade on behalf of the “impolite truths” — therefore very interesting ones — about the real, morally and politically bankrupt, results of that war. So it was that Austin App supplemented, quite independently, the efforts of the group of scholars then clustered around historians Charles A. Beard and Harry Elmer Barnes, who were embarking on their own ambitious revisionist “program” to write the true history of the war. Whereas that effort, in its early stages, tended to focus on the diplomatic history of the war’s origins, App’s emphasis was — and largely remained for thirty years — on the unholy trinity of what might be called the “peace crimes” of the victors who had smashed Europe: the Morgenthau Plan for the utter despoilment and pastoralization of Germany (officially disclaimed but largely enacted for two years under the Joint Chiefs of Staff directive 1067); the Expulsions of the German-ethnics of Eastern Europe, and all the atrocities attendant to this massively inhumane action; the Deportations back to Stalinist “care” of the millions of anti-Communist Russians and East Europeans who had fought on the Germans’ side. More than any other single man in America, Austin App as writer and speaker was responsible for bringing to the attention of his countrymen these three great crimes against Western civilization and elemental humanity. For this alone he will always be remembered.

App had actually touched more than one brand of nerve. Upon his path-breaking publication efforts, he became a favorite target of such loudmouthed smear-terrorists as Walter Winchell, George Seldes, Drew Pearson, the Anti-Defamation League, and assorted ADL front-groups like the Committee for the Prevention of World War III. (“World War III” being the imminent “next Nazi attempt at world conquest.” This in 1946-47, of course.) He was smeared and hounded as an anti-semite, anti-American, and pro-Nazi. Commenting on one particularly vicious — and wildly inaccurate — propaganda diatribe against App, the eminent columnist Westbrook Pegler wrote:

Dr. App’s writing which caused this explosion was a protest against the ravishment of German, Austrian, and Hungarian women by the conquering armies. The Society for the Prevention of World War III… does not appear to deny the truth of Doctor App’s charge nor even to deplore the crimes alleged… However the anonymous powers who put out that issue of the Bulletin thought it well nigh seditious of Doctor App to reveal enmity toward Soviet Russia.

Brushing aside the epithets, and welcoming the support that came to him from many Americans, App continued both his revisionist activities and his academic career as professor of literature. In 1948 he accepted a professorship at LaSalle College, Philadelphia, where he remained until his retirement in 1968.

Throughout the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s, Dr. App kept a schedule that would wear out less committed men. In addition to teaching, he continued to publish his own books and pamphlets on political/historical topics, and had several literary and human interest books published by other houses. He wrote more than a thousand articles, columns, and book reviews for such publications as Social Justice Review, Nord Amerika, the Philadelphia Gazette-Democrat, the Manchester (N.H.) Union Leader, the Cleveland Waechter und Anzeiger, Western Destiny, American Mercury, Common Sense, ABN Correspondence, Conservative Viewpoint, Amerika: The Ukrainian Catholic Daily, Ukrainian Quarterly, Deutsche-Amerikaner, Reason, Deutsche National-Zeitung, Nation Europa, and Voice of Americans of German Descent. He was National Chairman of the last-named publication’s parent group, the Federation of American Citizens of German Descent, from 1960 to 1966, after which he was permanent National Honorary Chairman. He was also Chairman, for ten years, of the Pastorius Unit of the Steuben Society, Philadelphia, a longtime honorary member of the German-American National Congress (D.A.N.K.), and Chairman for several years of the Greater Philadelphia Captive Nations Committee.

Austin App never failed to champion, whenever and however he could, the cause of the millions of dispossessed Sudeten, Silesian, and other Eastern German expellees. In his frequent trips to Germany he spoke regularly at many of the giant Expellee mass- rallies held yearly in Cologne, Munich, and elsewhere, becoming well-known to patriotic Germans as their principal, quite tireless, American friend and advocate. For his years of scholarship and public relations activity, he was awarded in 1975 the “European Freedom Prize” of 10,000-DM by the German Peoples’ Union. The prize was presented in Munich by Dr. Gerhard Frey, editor of the Deutsche National-Zeitung.

Dr. App was a member of the Editorial Advisory Committee of The Journal of Historical Review from its inception. His last major speech in America was “The Holocaust Put in Perspective,” delivered at the first International Revisionist Conference sponsored by the Institute for Historical Review, held in Los Angeles over Labor Day, 1979. The speech was published in Vol. 1, No. 1 of the JHR (Spring 1980). In his last years Dr. App several times expressed his satisfaction at the fact that he was able to witness the contemporary worldwide explosion of accomplishment and interest in revisionist studies of all aspects of the Second World War. Those now engaged in this work owe him, as one of the handful of pioneers in a field where pioneering entailed great risk and therefore great courage, their most heartfelt respect, admiration, and gratitude. He was a fighter and a champion in the cause of truth.

The most momentous encounter of 1951 was with Professor Johannes von Leers of the School of Politics in Berlin; I still vividly recall how Eberhard Fritsch and I fetched him from the ship at the port of Buenos Aires. There he stood at the railing, clad in a trench coat, a small black beret perched on his head, spotting us at once and waving with lively enthusiasm.

Leers had endured the years of internment in a camp run by the occupying powers with tolerable health and emerged brimming with vigor. His knowledge spanned an extraordinary range of fields—he was as much at ease with ancient history as with the present day and commanded six or seven languages, including traces of Indo-European and Arabic. His contributions to our editorial team were beyond price. He penned his pieces under various pseudonyms, most often as Euler, the owl being his personal emblem. The Soviets’ interest became even more lively when, in the next but one, i.e., the October issue, we published an equally carefully prepared map sketch of the Arab states from Morocco to the southern regions of the USSR, again with precisely detailed information, based on sources from the USA. During these critical months, it became noticeable that Perón quietly held his protective hand over our work. This thematic issue drew its vitality from the deep and varied expertise of Johannes von Leers, who lent it distinction with three contributions under different names. Eberhard Fritsch scaled back his travels to resume the magazine’s editorship, bolstered by the steadfast support of Professor von Leers and Erwin Neubert, whose value grew ever more apparent.

Johann Jakob von Leers was an Alter Kämpfer and an honorary Sturmbannführer in the Waffen-SS in Nazi Germany, where he was also a professor known for his anti-Jewish polemics. He was one of the most important ideologues of the Third Reich, serving as a high-ranking propaganda ministry official. He later served in the Egyptian Information Department, as well as an advisor to Gamal Abdel Nasser. He published for Goebbels, in Peron's Argentina, and for Nasser's Egypt.

“To briefly recall, Rudel had, on the Eastern Front, disabled over five hundred Soviet tanks with his dive bombings, thereby liberating many encircled German troop units during the retreat, and in the final weeks of the war, also rescuing cut-off refugee columns. After being shot down in the Russian hinterland, he had, despite his injuries, made his way on foot back to the German lines. After an anti-aircraft hit on his aircraft resulted in the amputation of his lower leg, he climbed back into his Ju 87 long before the surgical wound had healed, with his leg stump still bleeding, for new combat missions. And when Hitler, upon awarding him the highest decoration ever bestowed and because of his severe injury, intended to withdraw him from the fighting front, Rudel refused, standing eye to eye with him, and succeeded in returning to his Immelmann squadron to continue flying until the very last day of the war, in continuous service.

After his release from first French, then American captivity, he initially set up a successful transport business with two comrades from his squadron and only emigrated to Argentina in 1948—via Rome—where President Perón showed him great sympathy and offered every possible assistance.”

Hans-Ulrich Rudel was a German ground-attack pilot during World War II and a post-war neo-Nazi activist.

The most decorated German pilot of the war and the only recipient of the Knight's Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds, Rudel was credited with the destruction of 519 tanks, one battleship, one cruiser, 70 landing craft and 150 artillery emplacements. He claimed nine aerial victories and the destruction of more than 800 vehicles. He flew 2,530 ground-attack missions exclusively on the Eastern Front, usually flying the Junkers Ju 87 "Stuka" dive bomber.

Rudel surrendered to US forces in 1945 and immigrated to Argentina. An unrepentant Nazi, he helped fugitives escape to Latin America and the Middle East. He worked as an arms dealer to several right-wing regimes in South America, for which he was placed under observation by the US Central Intelligence Agency.
